Walking through the streets of Rome as the sky displays an ever changing colour palette of pastel blues and pinks makes the city seem even more romantic. Having visited on my own, a couple of years ago, I’m so delighted that this time I am sharing the eternal city with Neill.

Rome by Twilight

The Altare della Patria (Altar of the Fatherland) also known as the Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II (National Monument to Victor Emmanuel II) or "Il Vittoriano" is a monument built in honour of Victor Emmanuel, the first king of a unified Italy, located in Rome, Italy.

Our apartment in Rome was in the Monti district, near the Cavour metro station, just a short stroll from some of Rome’s most famous landmarks including Capitoline Hill and the Colosseum. The National Monument to Victor Emmanuel II, pictured above, was built in honour of the first king of a unified Italy. When it was built the citizens of Rome hated it, saying it looked like a wedding cake but now, some 100 years later, they’ve grown rather fond of it.

From here we made our way to the Tiber and Isola Tiberina, pictured below, then followed the river banks heading north-west before turning east towards Pizza Navona. It was Neill’s first visit to Italy. He’s half Italian by blood so it was long overdue. I’m pleased to say he loved it – the perfect short break to celebrate our 50th birthdays (Neill is just 10 days older than me).
