50 years: here’s a time when you have to separate yourself from what other people expect of you, and do what you love. Because if you find yourself 50 years old and you aren’t doing what you love, then what’s the point? Jim Carey
This month is a bit of a milestone, not just for me but for Neill, my fiancé, as well. He was born just 11 days before me and we are both about to turn 50. Yes, 50!
How did that happen? Where have all those years gone? I have no idea! I’m just hopping that this doesn’t mean I have to finally grow up.
While my arms are now not long enough for me to read the small print, my backs dodgy, as are my knees and fighting the pounds seems to get harder every year, I’m really looking forward to the next decade. The last ten years have been an amazing journey with a number of twists and turns, heartache as well as joy. I have no idea where the coming decade will take me but I have a feeling it is going to be exciting. And Jim, I am most definitely doing what I love and I’m very grateful for that. I owe a huge thank you to all of you who have ever read a single post, left a comment or enjoyed one of my photos, here on Travel With Kat.
In honour of the momentous occasion of turning 50, I’ve a few tasty treats lined-up right throughout the month. The calories, be damned!
100th Birthday Party
The celebrations begin with mine and Neill’s combined 100th birthday party at one of our favourite restaurants, Sen. Nothing fancy, just really great food. We’ll be tucking into tapas, such as Calamaretti All’aglio (sautéed baby squid in garlic, chilli and white wine sauce) and Mejillones De La Casa (fresh mussels cooked in tomatoes, garlic, onions, red and green peppers, mild chillies and cream). No calories there then.
Afternoon tea at Amberley Castle
Neill, myself and my Mum will be partaking in smoked salmon sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and delectable dainty cakes in the historic and oh, so refined, setting of this stunning 12th century castle by the South Downs in Sussex.
Dubai Food Festival 2015
Following this I’ll be jetting off with Dubai Tourism, on a mission to discover Emirati flavours in this dazzling city. Although the itinerary isn’t set in stone it will roughly run along the lines of…. dining in the desert while on safari, exploring the souks and street food of the Old Town, enjoying the Dubai Food Festival, as well as a number of other tasty treats including those on offer at our hotel, the Ritz Carlton, pictured below.
Dubai has always fascinated me. Normally when I travel I tend to hunt out authentic, traditional experiences so I’m particularly looking forward to exploring the city’s Old Town. However, the glitz and glamour of the modern city I find quite hypnotising and I can’t wait to experience it for myself. It will also be a real treat to soak up some winter sunshine.
Age 50! Now is the time to make your mark on the world-explore the Antarctic or become an astronaut. Make your mind up to take on exciting new challenges – straight after your afternoon nap. Unknown
Romance in Rome
The day of my birthday I’ll be spending with Neill in the eternal city. Despite being half Italian, Neill has never been to Italy before. I had a fabulous time in Rome on my own, a few years ago, and I can’t wait to return to enjoy a romantic break there with my intended, sharing ‘pizza by the slice’, strolls along the river, exploring the Colosseum and perhaps a gelato or two.

I should warn you though, it is liable to make you very, very hungry.
